Beagle Sailboat Day One - Puerto Ayora

Tues Feb 11th
After a morning of getting breakfast and killing a little time, we headed to a nice restaurant (Andrea & Valerio) where we were to meet up with the naturalist guide for our cruise, Walter.  There we also met with all our fellow passengers for the 8 day sailing.

The lunch was yummy (we had ceviche, tuna, pork, chocolate cake) and the restaurant is remarkable in that they work to source 60%+ of their menu items locally.  We've noticed that with several businesses here that they really emphasize not wasting resources.  Why can't we all be that way?

We walked as group to Darwin Research Station to see the Giant Tortoises and read about the work they do for the islands and animals.  They had a station where we could stamp our passports with a little turtle stamp too.

Next we jumped on the pangas (big inflatable boats) and took our first ride to the Beagle.  What a beautiful ship!  It's a 16 passenger sailing yacht.  Our cute little cabin has bunk beds (full size bed on bottom, single on top).  We put our luggage on top and planned to sleep on the bottom.  We have two little port hole windows - one by top bunk and one in the bathroom.

Our first dinner on the ship was a real treat!  Ricky, our bartender & food-setter-outer-dude, set out an amazing meal.  Next, Walter the Naturalist Guide briefed us on the next day's schedule.  Everyone was exhausted from the hot day so we all retired early.

Around midnight the ship pulled anchor and we motored to Floreana Island.
