Where are the Galapagos Islands? They are located 851 miles off the northwest coast of South America. The islands are part of the country of Ecuador which is about the size of Texas. Most of the land in the Galapagos Islands are national park (97%) belonging to Ecuador since 1959. Much care and effort has been put into protecting this archipelago made up 13 major islands, 6 minor islands, and lots of smaller rocks and inlets. In 1978 they were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The islands are very unique in their location (right on the equator, far from mainland, and at convergence of several ocean currents) and for all the endemic species (creatures found no where else in the world). There is so much to say about these islands! For Dave and me, it is really about the animals. We hope to see giant tortoises, penguins, flamingos, marine iguanas, land iguana, sea lions, BOOBIES (red footed, blue footed), and so. much. more.
