Monday was full of adventures.
We meet Niko's Dad for lunch. We all agreed that Niko got a lot of his personality from his Dad. It was the source of much entertainment. Niko's Dad made sure we all had beers (some if his faves were from Czech Republic) and rakia (a Bulgarian drink similar to brandy). Even on the way home we bought us two 2-liters of Bulgarian wine (yes you can buy wine and beer here in 2-liters). Super nice guy with a lot of knowledge of Bulgaria and travel experience from his years of working on container ships around the world).
We also met some of Niko's friends. What a treat. It took a while to warm up but we all enjoyed the evening asking questions about each other's countries and cultures (which btw is one if my favorite things about traveling). All of his friends knew a lot about Bulgaria history; especially the revolution when Bulgaria fought for independence from Ottoman rule.
We stopped by post office so Lauren and I could mail off some postcards to our peeps in the good ole US of A. Always an adventure in a foreign country.
Other day highlights:
1) so Diana and Lauren decide they were going keep leftover meat from lunch and give to a stray dog. What started out a two dogs quickly developed into a four pack of dogs that followed us everywhere. They even started 'protecting' us from vehicles (by barking at them) and from another dogs (started a fight). Eventually we had to hide in the apartment for a 1/2 hour AND perform this elaborate process that involved walking the back way using multiple fence gates to shake the dog pack. No immediate danger to us but we thought having a dog pack follow us through populated areas and busy street was no bueno).
2) Headed to the planetarium. While the show wasn't all that sophisticated plus it was all in Bulgarian...we all still enjoyed the pictures and how passionate the Bulgarian speaker was about the cosmos.
3) visited a Roman ruin site of a huge bathhouse (thermae). It was built ~2nd century AD.
4) ate at a restaurant chain called Happy's. The servers were all women and dressed like Hooters girls.
5) We stayed up until 1am to watch the USA team win Ghana in the World Cup being held in Brazil. We don't all quite understand football (I.e. soccer) but it was fun to watch.
Oh btw the wedding went great. Only Niko was invited so just Niko and Lauren went. The groom is pretty well off so the event was pretty extravagant.
